Spectra Licensing Group is the exclusive worldwide licensing agent, of France Telecom, for Turbo Codes, Turbo Code related patents, and Iterative Interference Cancellation for Turbo Reception.

France Telecom researcher, Claude Berrou invented Turbo Codes in 1993. France Telecom is now the holder of the key patents for Turbo Codes and associated applications. These patents are available through the Turbo Code Licensing Program (TCLP) to ASIC and equipment manufacturers, as well as IP Core Developers on a non-discriminatory basis.

A patent license is required in most instances for the implementation of Turbo Codes within an ASIC, DSP, FPGA, or software.

Turbo Codes are one the most powerful forms of commercially practical forward error correction (FEC) available today; operating near the Shannon limit, increasing bandwidth by 50%, and achieving greater power efficiency than current commercially available FEC schemes.

Due to these advantages Turbo Codes have been adopted and utilized in worldwide communications standards such as:

  • W-CDMA (3GPP)
  • CDMA2000 (3GPP2)
  • DVB-RCS
  • 802.16 and HiperMAN
  • HomePlugAV and HomePlug GreenPhy
